Alexandria’s Science & Technology Team serves a highly strategic role at the intersection of Alexandria’s real estate, venture investments, and regional business development fostering local biotech ecosystems.
Real Estate activities include sourcing and underwriting potential life science and technology tenants, as well as monitoring existing tenants through a review of financials and scientific milestones and meetings with management. Additional activities include supporting innovative real estate offerings, such as Lilly Gateway Labs, powered by Alexandria, by sourcing and vetting potential companies and managing relationships with highly valued partners. Venture Investment activities, conducted through the Company’s strategic venture capital platform, Alexandria Venture Investments, help the Company discover and invest in innovative biotech companies. Responsibilities span due diligence of potential investments, their therapeutic areas and respective competitive landscapes, and the strength and level of innovation of their technology platforms. Regional business development activities include preparing for and organizing Alexandria-led and community life science events that convene, accelerate, and enable the growth of life science activities in San Diego.
We are seeking a Venture & Research Associate to support our San Diego operations by providing additional research capabilities and expertise in the life science industry, supporting venture and tenant underwriting, and assisting in and catalyzing local life science ecosystem engagement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in scientific and financial diligence and underwriting of prospective tenants for Alexandria’s portfolio and monitor various performance indicators relevant to companies in Alexandria’s network.
- Contribute to Alexandria’s venture capital activity by sourcing potential investments and meeting with their management, supporting related due diligence, and composing investment reports and memos.
- Be responsible for one-on-one meetings with prospective and current portfolio companies, ongoing evaluation of their research and development plans and fundraising efforts, review of pitch decks, etc.
- Conduct in-depth research (qualitative and quantitative) relevant to various disease and therapeutic areas, U.S. healthcare and regulatory activities, and broader trends in the life science and technology industries.
- Monitor and summarize relevant news and information coming out of major media sources, key industry conferences, company earnings calls, press releases, and SEC filings.
- Conduct research and analyze performance indicators for specific tenants and other companies of interest.
- Foster strong connections in the life science industry, including with universities, research institutions, and early-stage companies.
Other Responsibilities:
- Collaborate cross-functionally across Alexandria’s leasing, accounting, finance, and regional leadership teams to support core business objectives.
- Prepare correspondence, background information, and/or event materials as needed.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a life science-related field required. Master’s or PhD a plus.
- Minimum 3-5 years’ prior work experience (or equivalent educational experience, e.g., PhD work) within the life science industry in consulting, investment banking, or business development capacity preferred.
- Solid understanding of the biotech industry, including, but not limited to, chemistry and biology fundamentals, the drug development process, the U.S. healthcare and regulatory landscape, and venture and equity financing.
- Strong research and analytical skills, and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and effectively manage and organize multiple projects concurrently.
- Excellent written communication skills a must, with ability to create concise and impactful written reports, correspondence, and responses to requests from team members and executive-level members within the Company.
- Communicate and collaborate with co-workers, management, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Capabilities in Salesforce, Tableau, Pitchbook, Evaluate Pharma, and other industry databases a plus.
- Limited travel may be required.
- The expected base salary range for this position is $150,000 USD to $175,000 USD annually. This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on the consideration of many factors, which may include, but are not limited to: the individual’s knowledge, experience, education, qualifications, skills, job location, and the Company’s compensation practices.
