The Managing Director, Cane Angel Network is responsible for rebuilding and management of a base of qualified, early stage individual investors; creation and management of a steady flow of qualified, early-stage investment opportunities; facilitation of the investment process from initial screening to closing; management of the relationship between portfolio companies and members; supervision of the operations of the network.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONSÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
- Develops and executes membership plans to motivate qualified UM-affiliated investors to join the network.
- Collaborates with the CAN steering committee and other UM units to recruit investors.
- Organizes member orientations, social gatherings, and educational activities for prospective investors.
- Supervises the management of the technology platform that serves as the primary vehicle for on-going communication with investors.
- Develops and executes a marketing plan to stimulate entrepreneurs to apply for funding.
- Networks with other early stage investors, entrepreneurial support organizations, and influencers.
- Sets-up closed-loop processes to insure professional and timely communication with investors, applicants and entrepreneurs.
- Facilitates the investment process from initial screening to deal closing.
- Defines, publishes and refines the initial screening process requirements.
- Recruits and manages a student associate team. Reviews and/or updates the CAN website as needed.
- Oversees the transactions and documentation of potential CAN sidecar fund investments.
- Ensures internal control oversight and compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with University policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
- Creates an effective control environment, conducts risk assessment, implements and monitors controls.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field is required. Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience is required. Experience working in, managing or administering an investment fund. Experience in biomedical investing is a plus. Experience working with or in an angel network, angel investors, venture funds, or other relevant financial and management positions. Experience as an entrepreneur or working closely with entrepreneurs. Work experience that includes significant administrative and reporting duties. Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
- Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
- Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office).
- Ability to develop, articulate, and manage processes for a start-up (CAN).
- Ability to perform a wide-range of activities with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of the early stage investment process.
Department Specific Functions
- Finalizes and publishes the in-depth due diligence processes.
- Builds due diligence capacity by collaborating with other University units (e.g. Business and Law Schools) to identify and develop student diligence teams.
- Supervises student due diligence teams.
- Reviews and edits due diligence findings and posts on the network.
- Coordinates and attends web-based presentations by companies who passed the initial screen and due diligence has been completed.
- Monitors the closing process involving third party investors leading deals.
- Works with companies and counsel to develop term sheets and close transactions, as assigned.
- Manages relationship between portfolio companies and members.
- Gathers and disseminates company updates and status reports.
- Organizes and updates presentations.
- Generates support and guidance for companies through the networks
- Manages the process for follow-on investments.
- Supervises operations of CAN.
- Recruits and manages a student associate teams.
- Updates and/or manages the CAN website as needed.
- Oversees transactions and documentation of the potential CAN sidecar fund investments.
- Prepares reports to the Vice Provost for Innovation on Network activities, investments, and financial/budget matters.
- Works with administrative support to keep accurate and timely books and records.
- Supervise annual audits.
