Balderton Capital Overview
Balderton Capital is a venture capital investor based in London, UK which primarily invests in technology and internet companies in Europe. The firm is considered to be one of the four biggest VC firms in the English Capital.
Benchmark Capital was founded in 2000 and became fully independent in 2007.
Since inception, the company made more than 100 early-stage investments between the year 2000 and 2020, and supports companies from Seed to Exit.
They have a solid track record of backing breakthrough companies such as MySQL, Betfair, The Hut Group, and Yoox Net-a-Porter.
Companies in the Balderton portfolio have the privilege to access Balderton’s network of executives who have hands-on experience of founding tech companies from startup to IPO. They can also utilize Balderton’s CEO collective and the firm’s platform of talent, legal, and marketing services.
The partners of the firm are Tim Bunting, Bernard Liautaud, Suranga Chandratillake, Daniel Waterhouse, Rob Moffat, James Wise, Rana Yared, and David Thevenon.

Balderton Capital Interview Process & Questions
Firms can always modify their interview process with each candidate. However, the general nature of the process stays the same at Five Elms Capital (or a firm like it). Here’s what you can likely expect:
- 4-6 rounds of interviews
- Junior investment professionals or the HR team conduct the first rounds, while more senior folks handle the later rounds
- Unless it’s “on-cycle” or “on-campus” recruiting, the entire process can last multiple weeks

Notable Transaction: Clue
Clue app helps more than 11 million people in 190 countries to better understand their menstrual cycle patterns and learn more about their reproductive health.
Their basic period tracking features are free, but premium subscription, called “Clue Plus”, is also available to subscribers so they can have advanced insights and evidence-based features.
In April 2023, Clue raised a €7 million funding round which was led by existing investors Balderton Capital and Union Square.
Also, for the first time in its history, Clue extended an invitation to its user community to become investors as well. This makes the company’s most important stakeholders, its users, closer to the product development process while also allowing them to take part in the company’s future success.
The funding was allocated for Clue’s scaling of its digital family planning offering, continuing research efforts, and expanding their product portfolio.
