M13 (short for Messier 13) is an early-stage venture capital firm which invests in disruptive software businesses.
The firm started investing in DTC and B2B models way back in 2016. But as they grow, they start supporting companies that shape the future of health, commerce, money, and work – including Web3 and AI.
M13 participates in Seed, Series A and B funding rounds.
Courtney Reum and Carter Reum co-founded M13 in 2016. The firm is based in Santa Monica, California – with additional offices in Los Angeles and New York.

According to Carter Reum, M13 has $750 million in assets under management as of March 2022.
M13 Interview Process & Questions
It’s normal for firms to make changes in their interview process as they see fit for each candidate. However, if you interview at M13 (or a firm like it), you can expect the following:
- More or less five rounds of interviews
- For the first few rounds, junior investment professionals or the HR team will be the interviewers, and the more senior staff takes over at the later rounds
- Interviewers will ask you a combination of technical / investing questions, behavioral questions, and fit questions
The whole process can last multiple weeks – except if it’s on-campus or on-cycle recruiting.

Why M13
“Why this firm” is one of the questions you should definitely prepare for as it almost always shows up during interviews.
To avoid generic answers, you can mention the professionals at the firm whom you’ve connected with during your networking efforts and share how their experiences at the firm inspired you to be part of their team.
It’s also a good practice to research the firm before attending interviews. To do this, you can try listening to interviews with its founders, investors, and key individuals.
For example, here’s an interview with Karl Alomar, Managing Partner at M13:
M13 Case Study
Firms often evaluate each candidate’s level of technical expertise and communication skills. Case studies are one of the tools they use during interviews to assess these critical traits.
Most case studies at firms like M13 will require you to present investment recommendations and perform financial modeling. But if you’re applying for a junior role, it’s best to prepare for a cold calling case study as well.

M13 Portfolio & Investments
According to Crunchbase, M13 has made 151 investments across four funds. Some of their notable deals include Ensemble AI, Layla, and WorkMade.
Notable Transaction: Code
Code is a payments platform which enables anyone from any place in the world to send money or make purchases online.
Their platform also allows creators to earn on anything they publish online such as blog posts, digital arts, and live streams. What’s more interesting is that people can charge as low as 5¢ per transaction.
In February 2024, M13 led a Seed funding round which helped Code secure $6.5 million. Union Square Ventures and multiple individual investors also participated.
M13 believes that Code has the right opportunity to create a payments network which can ride on the benefits of using crypto (low fees, self-custody, global), while also keeping the benefits of traditional payment methods (ease of use and privacy).
